THE CLIFF HOUSE
SAN FRANCISCO, CA | April 2014 (click photos to enlarge)
Perched on spectacular cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Cliff House is one of the crown jewels of San Francisco’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Sunday brunch in the Terrace Room is a quintessential San Francisco experience that should not be missed!
To celebrate Z’s birthday, his mom came down to dine our way through the city. I have to say that the highlight of our culinary tour for me was the Sunday champagne brunch at the Cliff House. This was a first for all three of us and it exceeded every expectation. One first can’t help but notice the intimate atmosphere. Unlike many buffet style brunches, I would estimate the seating was limited to approximately 20 tables at most and there are only three seatings each week. This ensured that the extravagant buffet table was always fully stocked and clean.
The buffet selections were a prime example of ‘less is more’. The spread included just a handful each of fruit, mixed salads, breakfast dishes, savory dishes, cheeses, pastries and desserts. The choices were limited enough that you could enjoy just about everything that suited your fancy without feeling overwhelmed or overly stuffed. Fewer choices meant that great care was placed in the execution and presentation of each and every dish. I had one of the most delightful eggs benedict of my life which is an incredible feat considering it came off of a buffet line and not made to order. The other star of the show was a house made butterscotch pudding and fresh whipped cream served in an egg cup. The addition of orange zest was a unique touch to cut the characteristically sweet flavor of the pudding.
If you’re looking for a Sunday brunch whose menu is as impressive as the San Francisco coastal views, look no further than the Cliff House. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended.
