Like many pantry staples, Homemade Coffee Syrups are incredibly easy and inexpensive to make at home. Decorative bottles and flavor infusions turn homemade syrups into delicious works of art.

We recently splurged by adding the Nespresso Vertuoline machine to our beloved coffee bar. Arguably one of my favorite places in our home, our coffee bar allows us to make bold french press, gourmet espresso blends plus simple coffees and teas. When we added the Nespresso, I completely fell in love with the gorgeous crema left at the top of each brew and wanted to convert our sweeteners to syrups to preserve the gorgeous separation. Syrups don’t require as vigorous of stirring to dissolve as granular sugars allowing you to sweeten both hot and cold beverages more evenly.

Our coffee bar is a focal point of our living space so I wanted a fun way to store both our coffee pods and our syrups. I found a large glass decorative canister at Michael’s that is gorgeous for storing our bright coffee pods and some uniquely shaped glass oil and vinegar bottles for the syrups. I stuck with making both white and brown sugar simple syrups but you could use this technique for a variety of sugars and infuse them with ingredients like vanilla bean pods and cinnamon sticks.

HOMEMADE COFFEE SYRUP

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
PREPARATION
  1. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring just to a boil, stirring until all sugar is dissolved.
  2. Immediately remove from heat and allow to cool completely before pouring into a glass bottle.
NOTES
For a sweeter syrup, use up to a ratio of 3 parts sugar to 2 parts water. Any higher sugar to water ratio and your syrup will be too thick to pour.

The key to our homemade coffee syrups was definitely these OXO SteeL Shot Pourers. They formed a much tighter seal than any pourer we tried, allowed the syrup to flow beautifully, and kept the bottles from getting sticky by preventing drips and spills. They allow you to use just about any decorative bottle to store your homemade coffee syrups and add a touch of style to your coffee bar.

Tell me, what are your favorite coffee flavorings? I’m excited to keep trying new recipes as we continue to enjoy our new Nespresso!
